Soul | Purpose | Intuition
On the latest episode of my podcast Spirited Conversations I discussed the concept of the soul, our purpose, and intuition. I decided to write up what I talked about and share it here for those who may want read instead of listen on Spotify or watch on YouTube.
So first off, when we talk about the soul, it can be called many things: life force energy, god/divine spark, chi, higher-self… All these to name the source energy within all of us, what connects us to the divine. Or rather, the divine aspect of each of us. How ever you want to define that divinity: God, Goddess, Universe, Spirit. Our souls are energetic extensions of that energy.
Now when we talk about our soul’s purpose, it’s so nuanced. What Spirit has communicated to me is there is a core purpose which is the same for all of us, and that is to connect with and express our soul (or higher-self) in every aspect of our lives. Not only with the special people in our lives, but also the people we interact with in our day to day lives, even how we treat ourselves. Allowing our soul to shine through has the potential to trigger the conscious minds of those around us to connect with their inner-light, even if for just that moment. I know, easier in theory than practice. Even I, someone who’s devoted their life to being a channel for Spirit and living intuitively, can have trouble with this in my day-to-day life; because I’m still human, so I have a mind and ego like everyone else.
Like I said though, that is our core purpose. How each of us expresses our divinity varies person to person based on our life circumstances or experiences. Imagine knowing everything that is in disharmony within the world and having a desire to fix every aspect of that disharmony. That’s your soul, as an extension of Spirit, aware of the disharmony and working to fix it. To do so your soul uses your circumstances and life experience to focus how best to express your light in an effort to cultivate harmony.
When talking about purpose, many equate that with a singular aspect or grand achievement in their life like: career, being a parent, or whatever it may be; which is not the case. It’s all intertwined. Also when we talk about purpose, there are many who believe the people who do horrible things (terrorists, murderers, rapists, etc.), those who lack emotional intelligence or just all around don't seem like good people are less evolved souls whose purpose is to evolve their own soul and be lessons to help others evolve.
From my experience I don't agree with that theory. I understand the reason people attribute horrible events to divine order for us to grow is so those events mean something and have purpose, rather than just being something horrible that happened. What Spirit has communicated to me regarding this is that the people mentioned above aren’t serving a divine plan, but are actually so far disconnected from their higher-self that they’re acting completely from ego. And we can definitely take those experiences as lessons for what happens when we listen to our ego and fears instead of our intuitive wisdom of connection and unity; but I don’t believe they’re divinely orchestrated.
Great, but how do we connect to our intuitive wisdom and express our higher-self? Well I’m glad you asked! At the start I mentioned my work as spiritual medium, living intuitively and how those were not the same. As a medium I’m able to communicate and deliver messages from the spirits of the dead, and as a psychic I’m able to tap into the souls of those who are still living to guide them and help them align with their higher-self and understand their own intuition. Those are gifts not everyone has. Whereas intuition is the energetic language our souls use to communicate with our conscious minds, and it’s always focused on ourselves: our alignment with universal energy, our path, our relationships to people and events, even connecting to your own spirit loved ones. So while not everyone is mediumistic or psychic, everyone is capable of being intuitive to empower them in their lives and recognize their spirit loved ones presence.
Again, great! But how do we connect to our intuitive wisdom and how do we distinguish it from mental chatter? Self-awareness and development is where to start. Understand yourself, your views, how you feel, why you view things and feel the way you do. If you need a therapist to help work through your shit, get a therapist. I’m know the importance of mind, body, soul harmony. Spirituality isn’t meant to take the place of mental health professionals. That’s a disclaimer I have, I am not a mental or medical health professional. I will say though that many clients have come to me and in our session I’ve been able to help where years of therapy hadn’t, and other times where I’ve tapped into things within my client’s lives where their spirits recommend they seek therapy because what is being talked about may be the root issue, but still need the right tools and do the work to actually heal or change their mindset.
I’d also say to foster a connection with your higher-self, practicing various forms of meditation and doing things that bring you joy and your passionate about. Whether that’s painting, dancing, going for a run or any physical exercise, spending time with your family and friends. Journaling is a great one for introspective work and recognizing your intuition. By fostering that connection with your soul you’re going to familiarize yourself with what it feels like and how your mentality is when you’re in alignment with your higher-self, which helps distinguish between intuition and mental chatter.
Many practitioners say one way to distinguish between intuitive wisdom and your mental chatter is your intuition will be the first thought and feel familiar because it’s coming from within whereas your ego is a thought or mentality you’ve adopted from someone else. To that I say, only once you’ve really cultivated a relationship with your higher-self will it feel familiar, because for so many what’s familiar is the mindsets they’ve adopted from others so when they actually start to pay attention to your higher-self it initially feels odd or foreign. Also it’s not always your first impression. Now after so many years of cultivating a relationship with my higher-self my intuition does feel familiar, but it’s not always my first impression, which is okay because I can at least recognize it.
One example is actually from earlier this year. I got a message from a guy (we were more than friends not officially dating or in a relationship) who emotionally fucked with me for 8 months 5 years ago, and seeing his name pop up on my phone made my heart instantly race with anxiety. In the message he apologized, saying how I was a good person and didn’t deserve how he treated, that he understood if I didn’t want to respond, but wanted me to know he had thought about me throughout the years and wanted to apologize.
My first thought was, "nah, I know he’s manipulative as fuck. I don't want anything to do with whatever he's trying." But I could recognize that being hesitation due to our history. So being me, I took a couple moments to shake off the past and tap in intuitively; specifically focusing on the energy between us. And I did this by just closing my eyes for a minute or so and bringing him and myself to mind as we are now. To my surprise it felt genuine, so I responded and now we’re good and chat every now and then.
Many people want to fast track their self and spiritual development and think it’s going to be super easy right at the start to recognize their intuition vs mental chatter. That’s where you get people who say “sometimes my intuition is spot on and other times it’s dead wrong.” When you think your intuition was wrong that when you go back and sit with every aspect of that experience so you can recognize when it happens again, knowing it’s your ego rather than your higher-self. Doing the same when you accurately recognized your intuition, going back to understand what the experience is like when you’re in alignment with your higher-self.
So yeah, that's at least a synopsis of where I’m at in my understanding of our purpose and some tips on fostering a relationship with your soul. I hope this has helped and maybe even triggered your intuition when I mentioned ways to align with your higher-self and spirit loved ones.
